Useful plant parts :
Root and leaf

Uses in traditional medicine :

  • Root infusion is given to strengthen the kidney and urinary system
  • Roots act as an emmenagogue and are given in amenorrhea and dysmenorrhoea
  • Leaves and stem posses demulcent properties and are used to treat gonorrhoea
  • Leaf juice is used for menstrual disorders, rheumatism and sinusitis

Scientific Research

Chemical constituents:

Acidic polysaccharide composed of 1,2-linked α-L-rhamnopyranose and 1,4- or 1,3-linked α-D-galacturonic acid residues from root bark; alkaloid: abromine from roots

Bioactivity :

Whole plant powder with Curcuma longa: antihyperglycaemic, hypolipidaemic; aqueous extract of plant: hypoglycaemic, hypocholesterolaemic; seed oil: antifungal, antibacterial, phytotoxic
