Traditional Knowledge

Useful plant parts :
Rhizome

Uses in traditional medicine :

  • Half a cup of powdered dried rhizome is taken morning and evening for rheumatic joint pains
  • Used as a fomentation on rheumatic joints
  • Steam of the fresh rhizome is inhaled to cure coughs and colds

Scientific Research

Chemical constituents:

Flavonoids: pinocembrin, pinobanksin, zerumin A, labdane type diterpenes: calcaratarins A−H, elemane type sesquiterpene: shyobunone from rhizomes

Bioactivity :

Pinocembrin: mitochondrial apoptosis in colon cancer cells; leaf extracts: antioxidative; essential oil and hydro alcohol extract of rhizomes: antifungal, antinociceptive, aphrodisiac, anti-inflammatory, anticancer

 

Clinical:

Rhizome is used as an ingredient of the polyherbal formulation “maharasnadi quatha” which is used for rheumatoid arthritis
