Traditional Knowledge

Useful plant parts :
Bark, root and flower bud

Uses in traditional medicine :

  • Decoction of the root is taken thrice a day for dyspepsia and diarrhoea and also it acts as a vermifuge for internal parasites in the intestinal tract
  • Decoction of the bark is taken for slimming
  • Dried flower buds are used to treat piles and dysentery
  • Bark is used to treat scrofulous enlargements of the neck, tumours, ulcerations and skin diseases

Benzoxepins: bauhiniastatins 1−4, pacharin, dihydrobenzofurans, bibenzyl from roots; phytohemagglutinin from seeds; flavonoid glycoside: methoxyflavone derivative from stem

Stem: used with other herbs for cancer treatment; bark extract: stimulates thyroid function; ethanol extract of stem: analgaesic, anti-inflammatory; methanol extract of leaves: wound healing, hepatoprotective, antioxidative, antimicrobial; root extract: antimycobacterial, antimalarial, antifungal, cytotoxic, anti-inflammatory
