Useful plant parts :
Bark, root and latex

Uses in traditional medicine :

  • Bark crushed with lime juice is used for skin diseases
  • Medicated oil prepared with crushed roots are used for secondary syphilis
  • Dried powder of root bark with bee honey is used to treat dysentery, enlargement of abdominal viscera, intestinal worms and jaundice
  • Fresh latex is topically applied for ring worm of scalp
  • North directed root is used as a snake repellent and to treat snake bites

Chemical constituents:

Flavonoid: lsorhamnetin glycosides, terpene: taraxasteryl acetate, pregnane glycosides: calotroposides C–G from aerial parts and roots

Bioactivity :

Latex: ingredient of the drug, ‘Swarnabhasma’ shows increased superoxide dismutase and catalase activity; alcohol extract of debarked roots: analgaesic, anticonvulsant, anxiolytic, sedative; root extract: antipyretic against yeast-induced and typhoid vaccine-induced fever
