  • Heated tender stem juice is dropped into nostrils to arrest nose bleedings
  • Good remedy for scurvy and irregular menstruation
  • Given for otorrhoea and earache
  • Specific for fractures, ulcers and wounds
  • Used for muscle pains, palpitation and as an anthelmintic agent

Scientific Research

Chemical constituents:

Flavonoids: luteolin and β-sitosterol, vitamin C and E, triterpenes: oxoonocer-ene derivatives, taraxerol and friedelane derivatives; higher alkane derivatives from plant; stilbene derivatives: quadrangularins A–C, resveratrol, piceatannol, pallidol and parthenocissine A from stems

Bioactivity :

Alcohol extract of plant: antiosteoporotic, gastroprotective, anti-inflammatory, analgaesic, antipyretic and venotonic; aqueous and alcohol extracts of stem: anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antioxidative, gastroprotective, hepatoprotective and have developed phytochemical scaffold for bone tissue engineering using the extract, anticonvulsive, sedative, antitumour, anthelmintic

Clinical:

Effective for controlling obesity and its related complications in combination with Irvingia gabonensis; Supplement for reducing joint pains
