Traditional Knowledge

Useful plant parts :
Root and seed

Uses in traditional medicine :

  • Very low doses of dried seeds with boiled milk acts as a very strong drastic purgative
  • Roots ground with Aristolochia indica (Sapsanda) roots are applied on poisonous snake bites
  • Seeds are poisonous and used to treat rheumatism, glandular swellings, chronic bronchitis, pulmonary affections, dropsy, intestinal obstructions, fever, constipation and ascites

Scientific Research

Chemical constituents:

 Isoguanosine from plant; phorbol diesters from seeds

Bioactivity :

Seeds: biochemical tool for standard tumor promoting agent in carcinogenesis experiments; methanol extract of seeds: inhibitor of HIV-1 induced cytopathic effect

 

 

Clinical:

Caution : Ingestion as few as four seeds have proven to be fatal
