Uses in traditional medicine :

  • A tea spoon of infusion of the powdered seeds is prescribed orally twice a day for indigestion

Scientific Research

Chemical constituents:

Terpenes: α-terpinyl acetate, 1,8-cineole, α-terpineol, linalool and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural from essential  oils of seeds and pods

Bioactivity :

Extracts of seeds: antibacterial, antifungal; petroleum ether, aqueous, alcoholic and acetone extracts of fruits: gastro protective, immunomoduletory, anticancer, diuretic, sedative, reduces blood pressure, essential oil of seeds and pods: antioxidative; fruit powder: cancer chemopreventive

Clinical:

Fruit powder reduces blood pressure, enhanses fibrinolysis and improves oxidant status without altering blood lipids and fibrinogen levels in stage I hypertention

 

Note :

Seeds are used as a food flavouring agent

Caution : Induces toxicity at over doses and affects energy metabolism and oxidative stress
