Traditional Knowledge

Useful plant parts :
Whole plant, leaf, root, flower, bark and fruit

Uses in traditional medicine :

  • Expressed leaf juice is given for diarrhoea, dysentery, cough, asthma and other bronchial  diseases
  • Used as remedy to stop internal and external bleedings such as bleeding gums, piles and peptic ulcers
  • An ingredient in decoctions for all types of fever due to kapha and pitta doshas
  • An expectorant, antispasmodic and blood purifier

Scientific Research

Chemical constituents:

Alkaloids: palmatine, vasicinone, vasicinolone, berberine, vasicine, adhatodine and anisotine from roots and leaves

Bioactivity :

Aqueous and alcohol extracts of leaves: antibacterial, anti-quorum sensing, chemopreventive; methanol extract of plant: acetylcholinesterase inhibitor, some of the reported alkaloids are anti-inflammatory

Clinical:

Herbal oral solution form ulated with other plants is effective in non-complicated acute respiratory tract infections; Herbal toothpaste formulated with other plants is effective for oral hygiene and gingival health
