Traditional Knowledge

Useful plant parts :
Bark, leaf, fruit and seed

Uses in traditional medicine :

  • Decoction of the mature bark is used as a mouthwash to treat gum diseases
  • Ripe fruit pulp is eaten for stomach problems
  • Bark and seeds are used to treat discharges from mucus membranes of the bladder and urethra

Scientific Research

Chemical constituents:

Triterpene saponin: mimusin, mi-saponin A, 16-hydroxy mi-saponin A from seeds; alkaloids, tannins, terpenes: taraxerone, mimusopfarnanol, ursolic acid and betulinic acid from stem bark

Bioactivity :

Alcoholic extract of stem bark: antiurolithiatic, diuretic and electrolyte excretion activity, wound healing, antibacterial, antiulcer; phenol rich fraction of stem bark: antioxidative; methanol extract of leaves: anticancer

Clinical:

Herbal toothpaste formulated along with other plants is effective for oral hygiene and gingival health

 

 

Note :

Ripe fruits are edible
