Useful plant parts :
Root

Uses in traditional medicine :

  • Decoction of the root increases the uterine contraction in child birth and reduces high blood pressure
  • Decoction of the dried root is used as an anthelmintic
  • Fresh roots ground with lime is applied as a snake bite remedy

Scientific Research

Chemical constituents:

Indole alkaloids: raumacline and N(b)-methylraumacline, ajmaline, ajmalinine, ajmalicine, serpentine and serpentinine from plant cell cultures and roots

Bioactivity :

Methanolic extract of leaves: antidiarrhoael, sedative; methanolic extract of root: improves glycaemic, antiatherogenic, coronary risk and cardio protective indices in diabetes

Clinical:

Tested to be used in a formulation to treat high blood pressure; Rauwiloid and serpiloid (resepine) derived from plant root used to treat psoriasis
