Traditional Knowledge

Useful plant parts :
Seed and fruit pulp

Uses in traditional medicine :

  • Seed oil is applied on the head to promote healthy hair
  • One table spoon of juice of the fresh fruit pulp is taken thrice a day for stomach pain in children
  • Used to treat itches, pain in the back and loins, rheumatism, headaches, skin diseases and malarial fever
  • Acts as an astringent against cholera

Scientific Research

Chemical constituents:

Sterols: schleicherastatins 1-7, schleicheols 1 and 2, terpenes: taraxerone and tricadenic acid from the stem and bark

 

Bioactivity :

Schleicherastatins 1-7: inhibit cancer cell growth; methanol extract of fruits: free radical scavenger; root extract: antioxidative, anticancer
