Traditional Knowledge

Useful plant parts :
Whole plant, root and leaf

Uses in traditional medicine :

  • Roots are used as a toothbrush for mouth sanitation
  • Decoction of the whole plant is prescribed as a mouthwash
  • Leaves are tonic to intestine (appetiser) and used in piles, syphilis and gonorrhoea
  • Allays thirst, enriches blood, cures diarrhoea, bronchitis, asthma, inflammations, boils, pimples, tumours, ulcers, leprosy and to treat poisoning
  • Acts as a digestive, anthelmintic, alexiteric, antipyretic and an alterative
  • Used to treat diseases of the liver, spleen, heart and blood

Chemical constituents:

Flavonoid glycosides: rutin, osyritin, retenoids: deguelin, elliptone, flavonoids: quercetin, lanceolatin A–C, tephrorins A and B, tephrosone, purpurin, purpurenone, purpuritenin and β-sitosterol from plant; prenylated flavonoids: tephropurpulin A and isoglabratephrin from aerial parts

Bioactivity :

Root extracts: cytoprotective, antiulcer; ethanol  extract of aerial parts: hepatoprotective, wound healing; ethanol extract of roots: anticarcinogenic, antilipidperoxidative; methanol extract of whole plant: spasmolytic, bronchodilator, vasorelaxant; aqueous extract of leaves: antihyperglycaemic, antihyperlipidaemic
