Uses in traditional medicine :

  • Leaf juice collected to a copper bowl is allowed to set as a jelly and eaten early morning for gastric ulcers
  • Leaves prevent bleeding from fresh wounds
  • Acts as a healing agent

Alkaloids: tetrandrine, fangchinoline, cycleapeltine, cycleadrine, cycleacurine, cycleanorine and cycleahomine chloride from roots and plant

 

Bioactivity :

Methanol extract of tubers: antibacterial; ethanol and aqueous extracts of roots: antisecretory, antiulcer, antioxidative, reduce blood glucose level and enhance insulin level; alcohol extract of leaves: diuretic, reduce oxidative stress; root powder: inhibits nephrolithiasis
